Anna Bernhardine Eckstein was a German teacher and pacifist. Eckstein trained as a teacher and campaigned for peace across the world. She joined the American Peace Society of which she became vice-president between 1905 and 1911. Eckstein collected over one million signatures for a proposal she had written before the Second Peace conference in The Hague. Frustrated with the treaties of that year, Eckstein went on to collect six million signatures which she planned to present at the Third Hague Peace Conference, but the First World War prevented this. Nevertheless, Eckstein traveled through Canada and Europe to promote her ideas. She used to wear white dresses as a symbol of peace. She was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1913. And, in 1919, joined the German League for League of Nations.
