Cesar Estrada Chavez was an American labor leader and civil rights activist. Chavez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) along with Dolores Huerta, which later became the United Farm Workers labor union. Namely, he asked Americans to boycott the grape because of the poor pay and work conditions agricultural laborers were forced to endure. Using nonviolent tactics like marches and hunger strikes, grape pickers made their plight a part of the national civil-rights conversation. After five years of the Delano grape strike, farmworkers won a contract promising better pay and benefits. Furthermore, their efforts led to establishing collective bargaining power for farmworkers statewide. In recognition of his nonviolent activism and support of working people, Chavez was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 1994.
