​Joan Chandos Baez is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and activist. Baez has displayed a lifelong commitment to political, and social activism in the fields of nonviolence, civil rights, human rights, and the environment. She is known for her contemporary folk music which often includes songs of protest or social justice. Moreover, Baez became more vocal about her disagreement with the Vietnam War. In 1964, she founded the Institute for the Study of Nonviolence (along with her mentor Ira Sandperl) and encouraged draft resistance at her concerts. She was instrumental in founding the USA section of Amnesty International in the 1970s and has remained an active supporter of the organization. She ultimately founded her own human-rights group in the 1970s, “Humanitas International”, whose focus is to target oppression wherever it occurred. Baez is a recipient of many awards, such as the Thomas Merton Award and the Ambassador of Conscience Award.
