Martin Luther King Jr. is the famous leader and spokesperson of the Civil Rights Movement. King is known best for advancing civil rights through nonviolent activism. He led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott, a central event in the Civil Rights Movement. It was a political and social protest campaign against the policy of racial segregation in the public transit system. He also helped organize the March in Washington in 1963, where he delivered his famous “I have a dream” speech. On the evening of April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a protest march in sympathy with striking garbage workers of that city, he was assassinated. Martin Luther King Jr. was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Prize for his fight against racial inequality through nonviolent movements.
